How to use it
- Choose your class from the menu at the top, or type names into the box. Students marked absent are left out automatically.
- Pick how many students you want in each group, or how many groups you want. Group sizes never differ by more than one.
- Click Make groups. Lock any group you want to keep, then Shuffle unlocked to re-roll the others. Press Present to show the groups on your board.
Questions teachers ask
How do I keep two students apart?
Open Rules under the settings and choose the two students with "keep apart from". The rule is saved with your class, so it applies every time you make groups and also in the seating chart.
Can I make sure each group has a mix of abilities?
Yes. Give students a tag such as A, B or C on the Your classes page, then tick "Mix tags evenly". Each group gets as close to the same number of each tag as the class allows.
What happens if the rules can't all be met?
The generator tries hundreds of arrangements and keeps the best one. If some students still have to share a group, it tells you which ones so you can add a group or change a rule.
Why are some groups one student bigger?
When the class doesn't divide evenly, a few groups get one extra student. With 25 students in groups of 4 you get four groups of 4 and three groups of 3, so no one is left in a group of 1.
Can I print or share the groups?
Use Print for a clean page with just the groups, or Copy as text to paste them into an email, your learning platform or a slide.
Are my students' names sent anywhere?
No. Your class list and the groups stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to create.
