How to use it

  1. Click the coin or the Flip coin button. Pressing Space or Enter also flips it.
  2. Read the result, then watch the tally and the history strip build up as you keep flipping.
  3. Press Present (or the F key) to show the coin full screen on your projector. Press Esc to go back.

Questions teachers ask

Is the coin flip really random?

Yes. Each flip uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator, the same kind used for security, so heads and tails are equally likely and no flip depends on the one before.

Can I use it for a probability lesson?

Yes. Ask students to predict the split, flip 20 or 50 times and compare the tally with their guesses. Results drift towards half heads and half tails as the number of flips grows, which makes a good discussion about small and large samples.

Why did I get heads five times in a row?

Streaks are normal with a fair coin. In 20 flips there is a good chance of seeing a run of four or more of the same side. The coin has no memory, so the next flip is still 50/50.

Does it work on a projector or smartboard?

Yes. Present mode fills the screen, hides everything else and enlarges the coin so the back row can read it. You can switch between a dark and a light screen.

Do I need an account?

No. The coin flip works straight away with no signup. Nothing about your flips is sent anywhere.
